What are the Benefits of Physical Activity?

The Many Benefits of Physical Activity
Physical activity is an important component of a healthy lifestyle and provides benefits for all people, regardless of age. Staying active can improve physical health, support mental well-being, and make everyday activities easier. Regular movement can also reduce the risk of several serious health conditions.
Benefits for the Heart and Lungs
Consistent physical activity strengthens the heart muscle and improves its ability to pump blood throughout the body. Exercise also improves lung function and helps increase the amount of oxygen available to muscles. Over time, the body's tiny blood vessels, called capillaries, can widen, allowing them to deliver more oxygen and remove waste products more efficiently.

How does Activity Protect Against Heart Disease?
Physical activity can lower several risk factors for coronary heart disease, a condition in which plaque builds up inside the arteries that supply blood to the heart. Regular aerobic activity can help lower blood pressure and triglyceride levels while increasing HDL, or “good,” cholesterol. It can also help people maintain a healthy weight, manage blood sugar and insulin levels, and reduce levels of C-reactive protein, a marker associated with inflammation and heart disease risk.
Physical inactivity is itself an important risk factor for heart disease, similar to high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and smoking. For people who already have coronary heart disease, regular aerobic activity can help the heart function more effectively and may reduce the risk of another heart attack. However, people with heart disease should discuss safe types and levels of physical activity with their doctor.
The Mental Health Connection
The benefits of physical activity extend beyond the heart and body. Active adults have a lower risk of depression and age-related declines in cognitive function. Physical activity can also improve thinking, learning, and judgment skills. Children and teenagers who are physically active may experience fewer symptoms of depression, while children can experience improvements in cognition even after a single session of physical activity.
Regular physical activity may also decrease feelings of anxiety and reduce long-term symptoms of anxiety. These mental health benefits can contribute to better sleep and an improved overall quality of life.

Physical activity is a simple but powerful way to support long-term health. Regular movement strengthens the heart and lungs, lowers the risk of heart disease and other conditions, supports healthy weight management, and benefits mental and cognitive health. By making physical activity a regular part of life, people can improve their ability to manage daily activities while supporting their overall health and quality of life.
