That Annoying Tickle in Your Throat? It Might be Post-Nasal Drip



Post-nasal drip is a common annoyance, especially when someone has a cold or allergies. It occurs when mucus gathers at the back of the throat or drips back from the nose to the throat. It can feel like a tickle or an irritation at the back of the throat. It often happens when our bodies produce more or thicker mucus than usual. There can be many reasons for post-nasal drip.


Reasons for Post-Nasal Drip


Post-nasal drip can occur because of bacterial infections, the flu, chronic acid reflux, and even pregnancy. It is a common symptom when an upper respiratory infection occurs and can accompany a runny nose and sore throat.


Another reason for a post-nasal drip could be a deviated septum. This is because the crookedness of the nose can make it harder for mucus to drain.


Age can also play a role in post-nasal drip, with older people more likely to develop a post- nasal drip because of chronic cough and drier nasal cavities.


Symptoms


Post- nasal drip can cause different symptoms, including:


  • Scratchy Throat

  • Hoarseness

  • Bad breath

  • Coughing

  • Nausea

  • Swallowing more often


Post-nasal drip can trigger coughing that can be worse at night. This is because lying down can cause the mucus to drip back and accumulate at the back of your throat.


Treatment


Post-nasal drip can be treated in many ways depending on the cause. It is recommended to get a doctor's diagnosis if you develop a fever, begin wheezing, or if symptoms last longer than 10 days. If your symptoms are extreme, it is recommended to see a doctor.


A doctor may prescribe an antihistamine or decongestant based on the cause of the post-nasal drip. If you are diagnosed with a bacterial infection, you will likely be prescribed antibiotics.


There are several home remedies for relief from a post-nasal drip. Taking a hot shower or using a humidifier can help relieve symptoms. A neti pot or other ways of nasal irrigation could also be used to clear mucus.


One way to relieve symptoms when sleeping is to prop up pillows in order to stop mucus from bothering you throughout the night. Drinking plenty of water can also help the mucus become thinner and provide comfort.


Conclusion


Post-nasal drip can be a hindrance, but it is a common occurrence, especially when you have a cold or an upper respiratory infection. Using at-home remedies can help provide relief for symptoms. However, if symptoms are severe or aren't improving, it is important to see a doctor.
