On January 7th, 2026 OpenAI launched a new tool directed towards health questions called ChatGPT Health. OpenAI claims that "Health is a dedicated space in ChatGPT where you can ask health and wellness questions and choose to connect your health data (like medical records and wellness apps) so responses can be grounded in that context (What is ChatGPT Health, 2026). This new tool could be beneficial for people to track and get advice on health-related questions, but it may also introduce problems.
Features
ChatGPT Health has introduced several new features that were not available with other ChatGPT models.
One new feature is that ChatGPT Health allows you to connect applications like Apple Health and MyFitnessPal, so you can receive advice on various topics, such as insurance options and diet plans (Introducing ChatGPT Health, 2026). This feature could be useful as information from various health apps could be used by ChatGPT Health to answer your questions and give you personalized answers.
Another new feature is that medical records can be uploaded. OpenAI claims that "it helps you navigate everyday questions and understand patterns over time—not just moments of illness—so you can feel more informed and prepared for important medical conversations" (Introducing ChatGPT Health, 2026). However, this has raised questions about how accurate this information would be. One article by the Times says that "multiple studies suggest that if there's missing information in your medical records, models are more likely to hallucinate, or produce incorrect or misleading results" (Haupt, 2026). Users may still have to exercise caution while using ChatGPT Health.
Privacy
Sharing health information with OpenAI has also led to conversations about security. OpenAI claims that "Health operates as a separate space with enhanced privacy to protect sensitive data. Conversations in Health are not used to train our foundation models" (Introducing ChatGPT Health, 2026). Despite these measures, some experts are still skeptical. Dr. Danielle Bitterman, a radiation oncologist and clinical lead for data science and AI at Mass General Brigham Digital, says that "The most conservative approach is to assume that any information you upload into these tools, or any information that may be in applications you otherwise link to the tools, will no longer be private" (Haupt, 2026).
Conclusion
ChatGPT Health can be accessed by signing up for the waitlist. As AI continues to advance, we may continue to see new tools for health in the future.
