Effects of Energy Drinks on Human Health

By: Jessica Chhoy

Introduction:

Why do people drink energy drinks?: Many people tend to consume energy drinks so they can get a boost in energy. We know that energy drinks are bad for us, but we reach for them due to the circumstances in our lives. Whether it be trying to stay up to study for an exam or fighting fatigue, we consume energy drinks for the energy. The real question, is it worth drinking energy drinks despite the effects it has on human health?

What is inside an energy drink?:

  • Caffeine - A natural stimulant that increases alertness and decreases fatigue

  • Sugar - An ingredient that enhances the flavors and profile of an energy drink

  • Taurine - In energy drinks, it may possibly help improve athletic performance by increasing endurance

Health risks of energy drinks:

The main health risk from energy drinks is stroke. When we consume energy drinks it may cause us to feel jittery, which this can cause us to have an increase in heart rate and blood pressure. These cardiovascular effects can potentially lead to a stroke. Other than stroke, energy drinks can cause side effects such as:

  • Anxiety

  • Depression

  • Hallucinations

  • Headaches

  • Mood swings

Healthier alternatives for energy drinks:

There are healthier drinks other than energy drinks that are sugar-free or low in sugar. Although they may not give you that strong boost in energy, they are a much better alternative for your health.

Coffee - If drank in moderation, coffee can be a strong source of antioxidants

Black tea - If you are looking for an energy boost like energy drinks, black tea is a healthier option as it contains a lot less artificial sugars as compared to energy drinks

Green tea - Research has shown that green tea may lower your risk in heart disease and high blood pressure

Coconut water - If you are looking for a way to boost your energy after a workout, coconut water is an excellent alternative as it is refreshing and filled with minerals, antioxidants, and electrolytes

Conclusion:

Should I drink energy drinks?:

Energy drinks are filled with many ingredients that can put our health in danger. It is best to avoid energy drinks if possible. Instead of consuming energy drinks, try to find healthier alternatives such as the ones listed above!
