Drug Packaging: An Overview

While opening a medicine cabinet, most of us may have wondered why medication comes in different types of packaging. Some may be contained within a transparent metal strip while others may be contained in a light proof bottle or a sachet. There are many reasons why packaging varies for every drug and it is based on their chemical properties and functioning conditions. In this article, different types of pharmaceutical packaging have been discussed briefly to raise awareness on how a drug’s effectiveness is linked to its packing conditions.
Manufacturing companies have a standard for packaging medicines and these standards are often tied to stability, shelf life, and protection of the product. A certain type of packaging would be designated to a medication, based on its chemical composition, stability of the product under varying temperatures, and chemical changes when exposed to light.

Primary Packaging
Packaging that is in immediate contact with the medication is referred to as primary packaging and the carton or the outer pack of the drug is called secondary packaging; packing medications in bulk amounts for shipping or transportation purposes is known as tertiary packaging. However, from the consumer’s perspective, knowing how to handle and store medicine packs properly is essential, because it can directly impact the quality or safety of the drug.
Types:
Blister Packs
Blister packs contain the tablet or capsule enclosed within a small dome shaped blister against a foil. This enclosure provides adequate protection to the physical structure of the tablet/capsule and prevents it from getting damaged or crushed. Such damages may lead to leakage of drug contents or even deteriorate the quality of drug leading to ineffective treatment.
Also, the foil type packaging is very helpful in indicating the number of tablets dispensed in total, to track the schedule or number of doses consumed. The only disadvantage is that some patients may end up breaking the tablet or squeezing the contents while opening the strip. One needs to be cautious enough to carefully dispense the drug from the foil without physically damaging the medication or it can change how the drug is absorbed in the body. Some medications are designed in a specific coated format, which can enable slow release of the drug in the body. Consuming crushed or leaked tablets may change the speed of absorption leading to unwanted or toxic effects.
Sachets and Packets
Sachets are commonly seen in oral formulations such as oral rehydration solutions, where one can directly pour the contents from the pack into the solvent. These packs will most likely have a single dose for consumption.
Child-resistant Packaging
This type of packaging is most commonly seen in over-the-counter drugs and supplements, to prevent accidental tampering of the drug by a child. Although it serves the purpose, some adults with significant disability may struggle to dispense the medication. In such cases, there are some provisions where an individual can request normal packaging directly from the manufacturer, stating their concerns about difficulty in dispensing. They may have to approach their local pharmacists or healthcare providers to order any such customized packs.
Light-resistant Packaging
Light resistant packs are commonly seen with blister strips or ampoules and vials for protection of medicinal contents which can react with light. The chemical composition or quality of some drugs may change due to exposure to light which can ultimately result in altered effectiveness or may turn the drug toxic leading to unintended effects. These packs have black colored light-resistant packaging, in glass vials or blister strips to prevent light from reaching the drug. Such medicines must be stored as per the instructions provided in the product pamphlet.
Vials & Ampoules
Intravenous solutions and injections usually come in the form of glass vials/ampoules often labeled with a specific dose and composition. These are mostly handled by healthcare professionals who are trained to dispense, store, and dispose them. Similarly, essential oils or topical serums are also packaged in this form to protect them from light and heat changes. For example, skincare serums like Vitamin C are packaged in light protected bottles, as the vitamin oxidizes with light leading to reduced effectiveness.
Conclusion
One must always ensure to follow the storage and handling instructions appropriately for all drugs to ensure safe and effective use. For example, tablets that have been removed from a blister pack or the ones that remain open for a long time must be discarded for safety reasons. Chemical compositions may change with heat and light, and exposed drugs may become harmful or ineffective when consumed.
