"Why am I still tired after 8 hours of sleep?"
The short answer is that sleep duration doesn’t necessarily correspond with sleep quality. Keep on reading to understand the factors behind sleep that are much more complicated than at first glance, although keep in mind that this isn’t a comprehensive list.
Importance of sleep
Many important processes occur during sleep. A primary function of sleep is the consolidation of learning and memory; essentially, giving the brain time to organize and work through memories. Sleep is also essential in refreshing oneself, thus benefiting focus, and assisting people in managing their emotions. Along this same idea is the management of stress. Sleep overall leads to better mental judgment, whether that be decision making or someone’s ability to realize danger.
Sleep is also essential in the process of growth and healing. During sleep, growth hormone is released to enable tissue repair. Poor sleep also results in a weakened immune system. In general, sleep is very important for maintaining one’s health and quality of life.
Sleep duration ≠ sleep quality
Poor sleep hygiene: this term is defined as the conditions that influence an environment, such as temperature, noise, and light. This most commonly refers to the conditions while trying to sleep, but could also refer to the conditions before going to bed, such as using a device beforehand. Poor sleep hygiene leads to poor sleep quality, leaving people tired even after 8 hours of sleep.
Stress and anxiety: stress induces cortisol and keeps one’s nervous system active. Normally, cortisol declines when night falls, which enables the nervous system to die down. However, when stress levels remain elevated, the body is more alert during the night, preventing someone from falling asleep easily. Furthermore, this continued alertness makes it harder to stay asleep and reach restorative, deep sleep. Certain habits like deep breathing, muscle relaxation, or gentle stretching are options to relax your body into a state better for rest.
Sleep disorders: these include sleep apnea and insomnia. If you’re feeling tired or foggy after you wake up, you may have a sleep disorder. Other sleep disorders include insomnia, hypersomnia, narcolepsy, and restless legs syndrome.
Nutrient deficiencies: lacking an essential nutrient (e.g., vitamin D, magnesium, B12, and iron) can leave someone tired even after a good night’s rest. This is because not having enough of these essential nutrients can leave the nervous system activated, leading to reduced sleep quality.
