To start off with defining what public health is and explaining the importance of public health. Public health promotes and protects the health of all people and their communities. Public health is a science- based, evidence- backed field that strives to give everyone a safe place to live, learn, work and play. Learning the importance of public health helps you improve the quality of life by helping children thrive and reducing the human suffering. Everyday, public health officials are working to prevent hazards and keep people healthy. It is responsible for tracking disease outbreaks and vaccinating the community to avoid the spread of the disease, declaring racism as a public health crisis, setting safety standards to protect workers, etc. There is so much that goes into public health and so much importance on it.
Many people don't know exactly what public health officials are when you say you work in public health. There are so many parts of public health and jobs that come out of the degree. Some jobs include restaurant inspector, policy makers, epidemiologists, community planners, health educators, sanitarians, occupational health and safety professionals, etc. There are so many career paths to take when getting a degree in public health. As mentions, all these jobs are all so different so public health is perfect for someone who has an idea of what field they want to work in but not exactly sure which job. Public health has so many options that you can try out.
Someone who has an interest in pursuing a degree in public health can receive a bachelors degree in four years and after, can decide if they want to pursue a masters degree in public health. Stated by the University of Minnesota School of Public health, a masters in public health program will train students to become public health practitioners who work in government, at non-profits or in industry to work with communities, implement and evaluate public health programs, and/or help raise public awareness of best health care practices. Some jobs included with a Masters in Public health are public health project manager, health consultant, healthcare administrator, etc.
Many people get confused with the difference of public health and healthcare. The healthcare industry are the ones who will treat the sick and provide care for them, whereas the public health industry aims to prevent people from getting sick or injured in the first place so they can avoid going to the healthcare industry. Also, public health focuses on an entire population whereas healthcare focuses on individual patient care.
