It is the opposite of the placebo effect, in which a person experiences positive outcomes after receiving a treatment, even when the treatment is inactive, such as a sugar pill or saline injection. The nocebo effect is considered a psychobiological phenomenon, demonstrating how thoughts, emotions, and expectations can influence biological processes within the body. (1,4)

The term nocebo comes from the Latin phrase meaning "I shall harm." The concept has gained increasing attention in recent years because of its impact on patient care and clinical research. Psychological triggers may activate neurochemical pathways in the brain. Studies suggest increased activity of cholecystokinin, reduced dopamine signaling, and alterations in the body's natural pain-control systems. These changes can amplify the perception of pain and discomfort. (1,5)

When discussing treatment options, physicians should provide balanced information about both benefits and potential side effects in a clear, honest, and reassuring manner. Presenting information without creating unnecessary fear can help reduce negative expectations that may trigger nocebo responses. 

Counseling before treatment can also be beneficial. Taking time to address a patient's concerns, answer questions, and correct misconceptions helps patients feel informed and supported. This process can reduce anxiety and improve confidence in the treatment plan. 

In addition, establishing a strong doctor–patient relationship is essential. Trust, empathy, and emotional support can decrease stress and encourage a more positive treatment experience. 

By combining effective communication, patient education, and compassionate care, healthcare professionals can help minimize the risk of nocebo effects and improve treatment outcomes.
