Steeping In Plastic: Unearthing Microplastics Released From Tea Bags


For millions of people around the world, drinking tea is a common daily ritual that helps to promote health, relaxation, and comfort. Tea may be steeped as loose leaves in hot water, then poured through a kitchen strainer directly into a mug. However, more companies now resort to packaging tea in nylon or polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic tea bags. This current technology has raised another emerging concern within many of these tea bags: hidden microplastics. 


Microplastics are tiny plastic particles that originate from the degradation of plastic waste, ranging from less than 5 millimeters in size. Exposure to microplastics can occur in the ingestion of marine species and water, as well as foods such as honey, salt, and marine organisms. It is estimated that humans consume between 39,000 and 52,000 microplastic particles each year. 


How tea bags release microplastics

Traditional tea bags are primarily made from paper fibers and are biodegradable. Many modern tea bags are made from nylon or polyethylene terephthalate and have adapted durability and visual appeal for the general public. Additional components of tea bags include heat-resistant adhesives and strength-adding agents called polypropylene and epichlorohydrin. When these plastics combine with hot water, the heat causes tiny microplastics to break away from the material and infuse into the tea. High temperatures of 95 degrees Celsius or more degrade the plastic structure, leading to the release of microplastics and smaller nanoplastics. Researchers discovered that one plastic tea bag releases between 11.6 billion microplastics (MPs) and 3.1 billion nanoplastics (NPs). 


Potential health risks posed by microplastics

Individuals who regularly drink tea may be frequently ingesting billions of microplastic particles, all with the potential to enter and affect the body’s cells. Microplastics also contain additional additives, pollutants, irritants, and heavy metals that enter the digestive system and contribute to health risks. Although the long-term health effects of these particles are still being actively studied in animals, researchers believe that intracellular accumulation of microplastics may contribute to toxicity, inflammation, hormonal disruption, and immune system dysregulation. 


Possible impacts on gut health include irritation and weakening of the gut lining, leading to malabsorption and nutrient deficiencies. This ultimately makes the body susceptible to diseases as the microplastics, additional additives, and toxins alter the balance of gut flora/immune system and disrupt natural digestion. 


Safer alternatives for tea drinkers

Consumers who are concerned about the health risks of microplastics in tea bags can take practical measures to reduce exposure:


  • Choose loose leaf tea instead of packaged tea bags

  • Choose brands that use plastic-free, biodegradable tea bags

  • Use stainless steel or glass infusers and cloth-based tea bags

  • Avoid using pyramid-shaped mesh tea bags unless the package states that they are free from plastic materials

  • Research eco-friendly companies committed to sustainable packaging 


Select companies are making the switch to alternative, biodegradable materials such as plant-based fibers in response to growing consumer awareness. In addition, their tea bags are also free from materials such as chlorine, glue/sealant, and metal. 


Conclusion

The presence of microplastics in tea bags reveals how deeply plastic materials have become integrated into everyday products. And while research on the long-term effects of microplastics is still evolving, this issue raises concerns about the underlying impacts of consumer goods associated with health and wellness. By choosing loose-leaf tea, plastic-free tea bags, and reusable infusers, individuals can decrease their exposure to these particles while supporting environmental sustainability. Increasing awareness about responsible manufacturing practices can promote safer, eco-friendly alternatives for future consumption.
