Orthopaedic doctors, also called orthopaedic surgeons, are medical specialists who diagnose, treat, and help prevent problems involving the musculoskeletal system, which includes bones, joints, muscles, ligaments, tendons, and nerves. They treat injuries such as fractures, torn ligaments, and dislocations, as well as long-term conditions like arthritis, scoliosis, and osteoporosis. Some orthopedic doctors perform surgery, such as repairing broken bones with metal plates or replacing damaged joints with artificial ones. In contrast, others focus on nonsurgical treatments like physical therapy, medications, or lifestyle changes. Doctors who work in this field sometimes work with athletes as well. According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, orthopaedic care helps patients reduce pain, improve mobility, and return to normal activities. These doctors often work in hospitals, clinics, or sports medicine centers, such as those affiliated with the Mayo Clinic, and may specialize further in areas like sports injuries, pediatric orthopaedics, or spine care.

Orthopaedic doctors work with patients of all ages, from children with developmental bone conditions to older adults with degenerative joint diseases. They often collaborate with other healthcare professionals such as physical therapists, radiologists, and primary care doctors to create effective treatment plans. They commonly use imaging technologies like X-rays, MRI scans, and CT scans to diagnose injuries and monitor healing. Becoming an orthopaedic doctor requires many years of education and training, including medical school and several years of specialized residency training, because of the complexity of the musculoskeletal system and the precision required to treat it effectively.
