What is Intermittent Fasting?
Is it true that intermittent fasting can cause the growth of cancer? Well to start off, what even is intermittent fasting? Intermittent fasting focuses not on what you eat, but when you eat. With intermittent fasting, you only eat during a scheduled period of your day, whether it be for 1 hour of the day, or a larger chunk such as four. Intermittent fasting is often used for weight loss and works by protracting the period when your body has burned calories during its last meal and begins to burn fat.
How Does Fasting prevent cancer?
Research has demonstrated that with results of clinical trials, it is proven that cyclic FMD, also known as cyclic fasting and fasting-mimicking diets, is a safe and feasible method that is positively associated with metabolic and immunomodulatory effects, which is pivotal in the research for anti-cancer. Additionally, by the Translational Cancer Research, otherwise known as the TCR, it has proven that fasting therapy has shown positive results in chemotherapy protection and tumor-suppression. Fasting was a proven method to reduce chemotherapy side-effects, and suppress tumor progression while also improving prognosis.
Ultimately, the reason why this works is proven further by NIH, stating that intermittent fasting can protect normal cells from oxidative stress, while "decreasing cancer proliferation and increasing tumor cell death during chemotherapy treatment." This protection is due to a phenomenon known as DSR, or differential stress resistance, where fasting leaves the cells in a state of deprivation, which results in suppressed tumor growth and boosting metabolic pathways.
So What Should You Do?
While it is proven that intermittent fasting is a feasible and safe method to have effects on cancer treatment, it is not one that is deeply researched and experimented into, resulting in many unknown variables that could be at play. Therefore, it is really up to you in order to make the right decisions. While fasting could be beneficial, it is always good to make sure you are getting the right macros that are going to be essential when going through cancer.
