Escherichia coli (E. coli)

Introduction

"E. coli are germs called bacteria." (Centers of Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2024, Overview, para.1). It's found in numerous places such as water, foods, and the intestines of animals and people (CDC, 2024, Overview, para.1). The majority of E. coli are innocuous, and are a component of a healthy intestinal tract; E. Coli can assist people to produce vitamins, digest food, and defend us from harmful germs (CDC, 2024, Overview, para.1). However, some E. coli can make humans sick with urinary tract infections, diarrhea, pneumonia, sepsis, and other illness (CDC, 2024, Overview, para.1).


Various Ways that E. coli can spread and that may lead to infection

Meat from cattle can get contaminated during slaughter and organisms can be fully mixed into beef when its ground; bacteria that exists on the cow's udders or on equipment could get into raw milk (The University of Washington [UW], 2026, How is E. Coli spread?, para.1). Eating meat, in particular ground beef that hasn't been cooked adequately to destroy E. coli may lead to infection (UW, 2026, How is E. coli spread?, para. 2). The consumption of unpasteurized milk, drinking, or swimming in sewage-contaminated water may lead to infection (UW, 2026 How is E. coli spread?, para. 3) Lastly, bacteria that are in diarrheal stools of infected person may be transferred from one individual to another individual if handwashing or hygiene practice is insufficient (UW, 2026, How is E. coli spread?, para.4).


Humans can get infected with E. coli in the following ways: contact with animals, their feces or their environment; consumption of contaminated water or food; or contact with an the feces of an infected individual (CDC, 2024, Ways people get infected).


Symptoms associated with E. coli

Typically, symptoms develop within three to five days of exposure. (HealthPartners, 2026, Symptoms of an E. coli infection, para. 1). However, based on the strain of E. coli bacteria you're infected with, symptoms can evolve anywhere from eight hours to ten days (HealthPartners, 2026, Symptoms of an E. coli infection, para. 1). Initial sign of infection is typically watery diarrhea (HealthPartners, 2026, Symptoms of an E. coli infection, para. 2). Some common and less sever symptoms of infection are: loss of appetite, fatigue, low fever that's typically under 101°F, and vomiting, stomach pains and cramps, and nausea (HealthPartners, 2026, Symptoms of an E. coli infection, para. 2). If the E. coli bacteria led to urinary tract infection, then the symptoms can comprise of the following: a urge to urinate frequently, a burning sensation when urinating, abdominal pain, a cloudy and foul smelling urine. (HealthPartners, 2026, Symptoms of E. coli infection, para.3). Lastly, severe symptoms of an E. coli infection are the following: diarrhea with blood, diarrhea beyond 3 days, a fever over 102°F, and dehydration (HealthPartners, 2026, Symptoms of E. coli infection, para.3).


Groups of people at higher risk of getting E. coli Infection

Adults 65 years of age and older, children that are younger than 5 years old, international travelers, and individuals who are immunocompromised (CDC, 2024, Some people are more likely to get infected).


Prevention

With regard to prevention, proper hand washing before food prep is critical to avoid a lot of infections, meticulously washing produce, handling meat properly, staying with pasteurized foods, and avoiding cross contamination (HealthPartners, 2026, Preparing your food properly at home can help avoid E. coli infection, paras. 1-4). Furthermore, with regard to cooking meet, ground beef needs to be always cooked at 160°F, while defrosting meat: always wrap the meat in a bag, and do not defrost meat at room temperature (HealthPartners, 2026, Preparing your food properly at home can help avoid an E. coli infection, para. 5).

Additionally, wash your hands often, keep your space sanitized, and play it safe with pets (HealthPartners, 2026, Other ways to avoid E. coli in the home). Lastly, make hand washing something that is critical, use the most sound decision with regard to water sources, and when travelling, take precautions. (HealthPartners, 2026, Prevention outside the home is important)
