Dental Sealants and Childhood Cavity Prevention


Why Cavities Matter?

Tooth decay, also known as dental caries or cavities, is one of the most common chronic diseases in children. Cavities form when bacteria in the mouth feed on sugars from food and drinks, producing acids that slowly breaks down tooth enamel. Over time, this acid erosion can create holes in the teeth. If left untreated, cavities can become larger and deeper, eventually reaching the inner layers of the tooth and causing pain and infection. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that cavities are the most common chronic disease of childhood and that prevention can help protect children’s oral health for years (1).


What Are Dental Sealants?

Dental sealants are thin protective coatings placed on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, especially molars. These teeth have deep grooves and fissures where food particles and bacteria can easily be trapped. Because these areas can be difficult to clean with a toothbrush, they are especially vulnerable to cavities. Sealant works by covering these deeper grooves with a

protective barrier that blocks out food and bacteria (2).


Evidence That Sealants Work

Evidence supports the use of dental sealants in preventing cavities. According to the CDC,

sealants can prevent 80% of cavities for two years after placement and continue protecting

against 50% of cavities for up to four years (2). The American Dental Association and American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommend sealants for children and adolescents on sound permanent molars and on molars with non-cavitated occlusal lesions (3). This means sealants can be used not only before decay begins but also in certain early-stage situations before a cavity has fully formed.


Conclusion

Dental sealants are a simple and powerful tool in preventive dentistry. It can help protect

vulnerable teeth before damage occurs. When combined with fluoride, proper oral hygiene, and regular dental visits, dental sealants can play an important role in reducing childhood tooth decay.
