Introduction:
It is important to recognize the connection between our oral health and the nutrients that we consume. The nutrients that we consume can help prevent us from harming our teeth.
Natural Sugars vs. Added Sugars:
Natural sugars
Do not play a significant role in developing dental caries due to the calcium, water, and fiber that they provide. Foods that include natural sugars are vegetables, fruits, and milk.
Added Sugars
Excessive intake in added sugars can lead to dental caries as sugar can attract bad bacteria lowering your mouth's pH levels. A low pH level would make the perfect environment for bacteria to thrive leading to the development of dental caries.
Acidic Beverages:
Sports drinks, energy drinks and even certain juices can be acidic which can cause dental caries. The acid can cause acid erosion to potentially lead to dental caries. It was found that dental erosions were common in Japan among athletes due to their consumption in sports drinks.
Conclusion:
Whether we choose to limit the amount of added sugars or acidic beverages we consume, it is important to eat nutritional foods that can keep our teeth healthy. There are various foods with various nutrients that can keep our teeth healthy!
