Consequences of Sleep Deprivation: You May Want to Rethink That All-Nighter


Acute Sleep Deprivation


Sleep deprivation occurs when someone fails to get an adequate amount of quality sleep every night, typically less than 7 to 8 hours a night for adults. Most people have likely experienced sleep deprivation for various reasons, such as pulling an all-nighter to study for an exam, meet work deadlines, travel overseas, or even to finish binge-watching a TV show. 


The occasional all-nighter is an example of acute sleep deprivation, or going 24+ hours without sleep for work, academic, or leisure reasons, and then returning to normal sleeping patterns afterwards.


Although it may sound harmless, sleep deprivation significantly affects cognitive functions, and missing a single night of sleep leads to impairments comparable to alcohol intoxication. Additionally, the negative effects of an all-nighter, including daytime sleepiness, fatigue, and reduced concentration and memory, often continue for over a week after the event.


Stages of Sleep Deprivation


Sleep deprivation can be broken down into 5 stages, with each stage bringing more severe side effects:


Stage 1: 24 hours without sleep


After 24 hours of no sleep, a person will begin to show signs of cognitive impairment equivalent to roughly a 0.10% BAC. The legal intoxication limit for driving is 0.08%, so people should highly reconsider driving at this stage. Individuals will experience lower levels of alertness, a limited attention span, drowsiness, changes in mood, reductions in executive function, and lowered visual perception.


Stage 2: 36 hours without sleep


After 36 hours, a person will experience intense sleep pressure, or a very strong urge to sleep. They will experience intense fatigue and may begin to have microsleeps, which are brief, involuntary episodes of sleep lasting a few seconds. During a microsleep, a person’s eyes may be open and they may therefore appear awake, but they will not be aware of what they're experiencing.


Stage 3: 48 hours without sleep


48 hours without sleep is known as the start of extreme sleep deprivation. The desire to sleep will become even more overwhelming, and it will be very hard to stay awake, with microsleeps becoming more likely. Additionally, psychological changes such as anxiety, irritability, and the potential for perceptual distortions become more common. Perceptual distortions can manifest in the form of illusions (misinterpretations of real stimuli), or hallucinations (sensory perceptions that are not actually present).


Stage 4: 72 hours without sleep


After 72 hours without sleep, the urge to sleep will become nearly uncontrollable, and microsleeps will become longer and more frequent. A person will likely experience severe cognitive impairment, lapses in memory, paranoia, disordered thinking, and significant distortions in perception, with hallucinations becoming more complex and frequent.


Stage 5: 96 hours or more without sleep


At the point of 4 days, or 96 hours without sleep, the effects of sleep deprivation become dangerous, with perceptions becoming so distorted that they resemble acute psychosis. The brain will no longer be able to distinguish reality from hallucinations, and a person will experience severe disorientation, changes in mood, and a near complete inability to concentrate.


Recovery from Acute Sleep Deprivation


Acute sleep deprivation comes with many side effects: compromised reflexes, a limited attention span, and a reduced capacity for decision making. In addition to the immediate effects of cognitive decline, a sleep deprived person will likely experience extreme fatigue, mood swings, and psychological impairments such as hallucinations. There is also an increased accident risk, given that a sleep deprived person’s level of impairment is similar to being under the influence of alcohol. 


However, these acute effects are temporary, and once a person returns to getting healthy amounts of sleep (7-9 hours every night), their negative symptoms will subside.


Chronic Sleep Deprivation


Although acute sleep deprivation will likely not result in any long-term physical or psychological effects, allowing sleep deprivation to become habitual, or chronic, can cause significant harm, even if it doesn’t feel detrimental in the moment. 


Chronic sleep deprivation, whether voluntarily or due to a sleep disorder, increases the risk of developing long-term conditions that impact a person’s health and quality of life. Some of the resulting problems from chronic sleep deprivation include an elevated risk of type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, weakened immunity, hormonal imbalances, mood disorders, dementia, and premature death.


To avoid chronic sleep deprivation, aim to get a healthy amount of sleep every night even if you have a busy schedule or an active social life. If you are suffering from a sleep disorder such as insomnia, consider improving your sleep hygiene practices, establishing a strict sleep schedule, or even seeking assistance from a sleep specialist or doctor.


While it is okay to occasionally compromise on sleep quality and quantity, don’t let all-nighters take priority over a good night’s sleep you may just end up costing yourself your long-term health.
