1.0 INTRODUCTION 

You are halfway through an exciting movie. Just one more scene before you call it a night. Then suddenly, 

Your eyes begin to sting, your vision becomes blurry, and a mild headache creeps in. You pause the movie, rub your eyes, and assume you will feel better after a short break. 

If this sounds familiar, you are not alone. 

Eye discomfort after spending a long time looking at a phone, computer, tablet, or television screen is common among many people. These symptoms can have several causes, including dry eyes, uncorrected vision problems, poor lighting, sitting too close or too far from the screen, or eye strain from not wearing the correct prescription glasses. However, one of the most frequent causes is Computer Vision Syndrome. 

This article will help you understand what Computer Vision Syndrome is, why it happens, the symptoms to watch out for, and simple steps you can take to protect your eyes while using digital screens. 

1.1 What is Computer Vision Syndrome? 

Computer Vision Syndrome, also called Digital Eye Strain, is a group of eye and vision problems that can develop after spending long periods using digital screens such as computers, smartphones, tablets, and televisions (2, 3). 

Computer Vision Syndrome is among the most significant occupational risks of the 21st century, which affects 70% of computer users (4). It happens because your eyes have to work harder to focus on digital screens for a long time, especially when you do not take adequate breaks or when viewing conditions are poor. 

2.0 Symptoms 

Computer Vision Syndrome can affect more than just your eyes. While blurred vision, dry eyes, and headaches are among the most common symptoms, spending long hours looking at digital screens can also leave your neck, shoulders, and back feeling stiff or sore because of poor posture. 

Common symptoms of Computer Vision Syndrome include eye strain or tired eyes, dry, irritated, or burning eyes, blurred or fluctuating vision, headaches, increased sensitivity to light, difficulty focusing when looking away from the screen, pain behind the eyes, and pain or stiffness in the neck, shoulders, or upper back (2, 3). 

These symptoms usually become more noticeable during or after prolonged screen use and often improve after resting your eyes or reducing screen time. 


3.0 Causes 

Computer Vision Syndrome develops when your eyes and body are placed under more stress than they can comfortably handle during prolonged screen use. The longer you use a digital device without taking breaks, the greater the strain. 

Reduced Blinking: One of the main causes is reduced blinking. Normally, you blink about 17 times every minute. However, when using a digital screen, you may blink only about 4 times as often (5). Since blinking spreads tears across the surface of the eyes, blinking less allows the eyes to dry out, making them feel dry, irritated, or gritty. This is one of the most common and most manageable causes of Computer Vision Syndrome (2). 

Constant eye refocusing: Another cause is the constant effort your eyes make to stay focused. Unlike words on a printed page, text and images on digital screens are made up of tiny dots called pixels, which constantly flicker and refresh. Your eyes repeatedly adjust their focus to keep images sharp, even though you are not aware of it. Over time, this continuous refocusing can lead to eye strain and blurred vision (2). 

Underlying vision conditions: Uncorrected vision problems, such as short-sightedness, long-sightedness, astigmatism, or wearing an outdated glasses prescription, can make symptoms worse because your eyes have to work even harder to keep objects in focus (3). 

Poor viewing habits: Poor viewing habits can increase your risk. Sitting too close or too far from the screen, placing the screen at an uncomfortable angle, using a device for many hours without regular breaks (especially while gaming or binge-watching), can all contribute to Computer Vision Syndrome (3). 

Screen Quality and Environmental Factors: The quality of the screen, as well as environmental factors, also play a role. Glare from windows or bright lights, poor screen contrast, very bright or very dim displays, and small text can all make your eyes work harder than necessary (2). 

4.0 Am I at Risk of Computer Vision Syndrome? 

Anyone who uses digital screens for long periods can develop Computer Vision Syndrome. However, your risk is higher if you spend two or more continuous hours each day using a computer, smartphone, tablet, or other digital device, especially without taking regular breaks. Sitting too close to the screen, placing it at an uncomfortable angle, using it in poor lighting, poor posture, or having an uncorrected vision problem can also increase your risk (2,3). 

The single biggest risk factor is prolonged screen time. You may also experience more severe symptoms if you already have dry eyes or an eye condition that causes blurred vision. Women are more likely to develop dry eyes because hormonal changes can reduce tear production (6). As a result, some women may notice Computer Vision Syndrome symptoms more easily during prolonged screen use. 

5.0 How is Computer Vision Syndrome Diagnosed? 

An eye care professional diagnoses Computer Vision Syndrome through a comprehensive eye examination and by asking about your symptoms, eye health, and daily screen habits (3). 

During your visit, you will be asked about the symptoms you experience, how long you spend using digital devices each day, whether you take regular breaks, and if you have any existing eye conditions or wear glasses or contact lenses. Your doctor may also ask about your work or hobbies, since prolonged screen use is an important clue. 

The eye examination usually includes checking how clearly you can see (visual acuity), determining whether you need glasses and the correct lens power, and assessing how well your eyes focus, move, and work together while looking at objects. In some cases, eye drops may be used to temporarily relax your eyes so these tests can be performed more accurately (3). 

By combining your medical history with the results of these examinations, your eye care professional can determine whether your symptoms are caused by Computer Vision Syndrome or another underlying eye condition (2, 3). 

6.0 Prevention 

The good news is that Computer Vision Syndrome is usually temporary and can often be prevented or relieved with a few simple changes to your screen habits and work environment. 

Take regular breaks: One of the most effective ways to reduce eye strain is to follow the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet (six metres) away for at least 20 seconds. Also, try to take a 15-minute break after every two hours of continuous screen use. You can set a timer if you are absorbed in work (2, 3). 

Blink more often: People naturally blink less while looking at digital screens, causing the eyes to dry out. Making a conscious effort to blink more frequently helps spread tears evenly across the eyes and keeps them moist (3). 

Position your screen correctly: Your screen should be about an arm’s length (20 to 28 inches or 50 to 70 cm) away from your eyes and slightly below eye level. Looking slightly downward is generally more comfortable than looking straight ahead or upwards (2, 3). 

Reduce glare and improve lighting: Bright light from windows, overhead lights, or reflections on your screen can increase eye strain. Use curtains or blinds and anti-glare when possible, avoid placing your screen directly in front of a window, and adjust your room lighting to a comfortable level (2). 

Adjust your screen settings: Increase the text size if you find yourself squinting, use comfortable screen brightness, and adjust the contrast so that text is easy to read (2). 

Maintain good posture: Sit in a comfortable chair with your feet flat on the floor and your back properly supported (3). Keep your shoulders relaxed and avoid bending your neck forward for long periods. 

Reduce unnecessary screen time: When possible, limit prolonged use of digital devices, especially for entertainment such as gaming or binge-watching. Giving your eyes regular breaks throughout the day helps reduce strain (2). 

Have regular eye examinations: Routine eye checks can detect vision problems that may worsen Computer Vision Syndrome. Keeping your glasses or contact lens prescription up to date also helps reduce eye strain (3). 

7.0 Treatment and Management 

If your symptoms persist despite making these changes, an eye care professional may recommend additional treatment based on the cause of your symptoms. 

If dry eyes are contributing to the discomfort, lubricating eye drops (artificial tears) or other treatments may be recommended to keep your eyes moist (7). 

If you have an uncorrected vision problem or an outdated prescription, you may be prescribed glasses or contact lenses. Computer glasses that are specially designed for the distance at which digital screens are viewed may also be recommended (3). 

For people experiencing difficulties involving eye focusing or eye coordination, an eye care professional may recommend vision therapy. This is a structured programme of eye exercises designed to improve how the eyes focus, move, and work together (3). 

Most people notice significant improvement once the underlying cause is addressed and healthier screen habits become part of their daily routine. 

Important Notes 

Everyone should have regular eye examinations, even if they are not experiencing any vision problems (2, 3). For most adults, an eye examination at least once a year helps detect eye conditions early and keeps their vision healthy. Your eye care professional may recommend more frequent visits based on your age, overall health, or existing eye conditions. 

However, do not wait for your next routine appointment if you develop new symptoms of Computer Vision Syndrome or if your symptoms become worse despite taking steps to reduce eye strain. Early assessment can help identify the cause and prevent your symptoms from affecting your daily activities or quality of life. 

8.0 FAQ 

8.1 Does watching TV or using mobile phones and computers cause blindness? 

No. Watching TV or using computers, smartphones, and other digital devices does not cause blindness or permanently damage healthy eyes (8). However, prolonged screen use can cause temporary symptoms such as dry eyes, blurred vision, headaches, and eye strain, a condition known as Computer Vision Syndrome. 

8.2 Why do my eyes become dry while using screens? 

When using digital screens, you naturally blink less often than usual. Since blinking spreads tears over the surface of your eyes, blinking less causes your eyes to dry out, leading to symptoms such as burning, irritation, and a gritty sensation (2). 

8.3 Is Computer Vision Syndrome permanent? 

No. Computer Vision Syndrome is usually temporary and improves with rest, healthy screen habits, and appropriate treatment when needed. However, if your symptoms persist or become worse despite these measures, you should see an eye care professional to check for other underlying eye conditions (2).
